Chiapas, a state of Mexico

Plural of Chiapa: a term commonly featured in the names of many historical Spanish settlements in the region, borrowed from Classical Nahuatl Chiapan, from chia (“chia”) + -pan (“place of; place of the”); alternatively, from chia + -apan (“river, stream”), presumably in reference to the Grijalva River.
