From Latin Habacuc, from Biblical Hebrew חֲבַקּוּק (chavakúk, “Habakkuk”). The name comes either from the Hebrew word חבק (khavák, “embrace”) or else from Akkadian 𒄩𒄠𒁀𒄣𒄣 (ḫambaqūqu), a kind of plant.
