Inherited from Old Spanish Santander (c. late 13th c.), possibly from Latin sānctus Emeterius (see Emeterius and Celedonius), via the forms Santemter > Santenter > Santander, a martyr whose head was brought there in the third century; less likely from the name of Saint Andrew (through a form Sanct Ander).
