Borrowed from Late Middle French arganeau, from earlier Middle French argrenel (c. 1383), from Old Occitan arganel (c. 1301), from Vulgar Latin *arganellum, from *arganum (“capstan”) + -ellus, a variation of organum (“instrument, tool”). Cognate with Catalan arganell (“cathead, saddlebag”) and French arganeau (“anchor ring”).
