Probably from Vulgar Latin *carudium, from Ancient Greek καρύδιον (karúdion), from κάρυον (káruon, “nut”); alternatively, from a substrate language: compare carolo. Cognate with Portuguese caroço, Galician carozo. Doublet of garojo, which was inherited via a different development.
