Either from Middle French charumelle (variant of chalemel, whence French chalumeau) or Occitan charamela, in any case from Late Latin calamellus, diminutive of Latin calamus (“reed”), from Ancient Greek κάλαμος (kálamos, “reed”). Doublet of caramelo and caramillo. Cognate with Portuguese churumela, Galician churumela.
