According to Roberts, from Old Spanish cía (“thighbone”), from Latin scias, from Ancient Greek ἰσχιας (iskhias, “sciatic”), from ἰσχίον (iskhíon, “hip”); referring to the use of this bone when rowing. Others consider it onomatopoeic.
