Coromines and Pascual, citing Eguílaz, suggest a variant of Arabic كِيس (kīs, “bag”) with the feminine marker ـة (-a), with a metathesis of the consonants that is said to be "frequent" in spoken Arabic, cognate to Moroccan Arabic كِيسة (kīsa, “bag”), and Old Galician-Portuguese aciqua (“bag”). First attested in the early 17th century.
