Probably from the variation from earlier cediérveda, after sporadic /dj/ > /ʎ/ palatalization (as in omezillo). Corominas and Pascual propose a Celtic *caerébreta, from *caer (Proto-Celtic *kaɸerūxs (“sheep”)) + *rebro (Proto-Celtic *remros (“fat, thick”)).
