Inherited from Latin cingulum, through a syncopated Vulgar Latin form *cinglum, with palatalization of the 'l'. However, this phonetic evolution for Spanish presents difficulties to some linguists, who prefer a Vulgar Latin form *cīnctulum, influenced by cīnctum, the supine of the related verb cingō (or possibly a derivation from cīnctum or cīnctus itself).
