Uncertain. Some sources derive this from día (“day”), via Vulgar Latin *dīa from Latin diēs. However, the sense "reveille" comes almost certainly from the Italian expression battere la Diana (“to beat the reveille”), in which Diana is short for Stella Diana ("Diana star"), a 13th- and 14th-century name for the morning star, possibly not named after the Roman goddess but from an adjectival attribute corresponding to Italian dì.
