According to Antonio Bravo, Melilla's official chronicler, the term comes from the behavior of the grouper. When this fish takes the bait and feels pulled to the surface, it seeks immediate refuge by entering a "tana" (a cave or crevice among the rocks on the seabed). 'tana' is a borrowing from Italian tana (lair, den, burrow).
