Uncertain. One theory is Latin scorteus (“leathern”), referring to the wrinkled skin of a toad. Another possibility is a derivative of a Vulgar Latin *excurtiō, from Late Latin curtiō (“viper”), from Latin curtus (“short”) (thus cognate or linked with Catalan escurçó, dialectal Italian scorzone, Mozarabic uxcurchón).
