From Vulgar Latin emorescĕre, frequentative of Latin ēmori, ēmorior (“to die (out)”), from Latin morior (“to die”), whence Spanish murrir (“to die”); but note also Old English smorian (“to choke, suffocate”). Cognate to Galician esmorecer and Portuguese esmorecer.
