Inherited from Old Spanish esponja, a semi-learned borrowing from Latin spongia (compare the expected Old Spanish outcome *esponza), from Ancient Greek σπογγῐᾱ́ (spongĭā́), a later form of σπόγγος (spóngos, “sponge”). Doublet of espundia and hongo. Cognate with English sponge.
