Inherited from Old Spanish galiota, galeota (c. 1295), probably from Italian galeotta, from galea (“galley”) (compare with Old Spanish galea, galia (c. 1270)) (from Byzantine Greek γάλεα (gálea), from Ancient Greek γαλέη (galéē, “type of shellfish”), from γαλεός (galeós, “shark”)) + Italian -otta (“diminutive-forming suffix”). Unrelated to Spanish -ota (“augmentative-forming suffix”).
