grulla

/ˈɡɾuʝa/

noun, feminine/ˈɡɾuʝa/plural: grullas

crane (bird)

Related: grulla blanca

Inherited from Old Spanish grulla, probably from an alteration of Old Spanish grúa, gruya, from Latin gruem (“crane”), from *gr̥h₂ú-, from Proto-Indo-European *gerh₂- (“to cry hoarsely”). The confusion of y and ll in this term is already present in medieval texts, and Coromines and Pascual suspect it may be explained as Leonese or Aragonese influence, in which some areas apparently showed a ll-y merger. Doublet of grúa
