From the diminutive of hijo (hijito), with apheresis, from Old Spanish fijo, from Latin fīlius (“son”), from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁y-li-os (“sucker”), a derivation from the verbal root *dʰeh₁(y)- (“to suck”). Spelled as hito, rather than the expected jito, due to confluence of English and Spanish in rural New Mexico and southern Colorado.
