joto

/ˈxoto/

noun, masculine/ˈxoto/plural: jotos

gay (male homosexual); joker; jack

Synonyms: comodín

Unknown, maybe from choto; also proposed from jota, Spanish name of letter j, because of mocking, festive aspect of the joker card figure applied to some gay males. One proposed etymology links it to the Classical Nahuatl xôtoj (“homosexual”). Another version is that gay and queer men were held in the J bay of the Lecumberri prison in Mexico City (J is pronounced "jota" in Spanish).
