Inherited from Latin applicāre (“to land, to reach the coast”), due to the strong naval tradition in Iberian peninsula. Compare Portuguese chegar, Asturian allegar, also Romanian pleca (“to leave”), though the latter might be associated with folding up tents and leaving (see Latin plicāre).
