noun, feminine/maɾaˈbiʝa/plural: maravillas
wonder, marvel; marigold; four o'clock flower
Synonyms: caléndula, dondiego de noche
From Late Latin mīrābilia (“wonder”), substantivization of the neuter plural of Latin mīrābilis (“wonderful”). Old Spanish also had maravija, with the expected outcome of the Latin ending. The form with -illa may reflect a borrowing from another Romance language (cf. Portuguese maravilha) or some kind of Latin influence.
