Inherited from Old Spanish membrillo, menbriello (c. 1250), from Latin melimēlum (“sweet apple”), via an intermediary Vulgar Latin *melimellum (according to Joan Coromines), from Ancient Greek μελίμηλον (melímēlon), from μέλι (méli, “honey”) + μῆλον (mêlon, “apple”). Compare Portuguese marmelo.
