Inherited from Latin polypus (“cuttlefish, polyp”) (compare Catalan polp, pop, French poulpe, Galician polbo, Italian polpo, Portuguese polvo), from a variant of Ancient Greek πολύπους (polúpous, literally “many footed”), from πολύς (polús, “many”) + πούς (poús, “foot”). Doublet of pólipo.
