sayonara

/saʝoˈnaɾa/

noun, feminine/saʝoˈnaɾa/plural: sayonaras

flip-flop, thong (Australia), jandal (New Zealand)

Synonyms: bamba, chancla, chola, ojota, slap

Borrowed from English sayonara, from Japanese さようなら (sayōnara, “farewell”, literally “if that's the way it is”) or its shorter, less traditional form さよなら (sayonara). Use for footwear comes from first seeing this footwear in the 1957 film Sayonara. Cognate with Greek σαγιονάρα (sagionára, “flip-flop, thong, jandal”).
