Uncertain; possibly from Arabic تَرْب (tarb, “bowels”), or perhaps connected to Old Norse torf (“turf, sod”) (see e.g. Middle Irish tarpán/torpán (“bunch of grapes; clod”)). See Portuguese tripa and Italian trippa.
