abducir

to abduce, to abduct (draw away from the median axis of the body)

Usage

"To abduct" — most often encountered today in the pop-culture sense of alien abduction (ser abducido por extraterrestres), though it's also a formal logic term for a type of inference (abducción, "abductive reasoning") distinct from deduction and induction.

Examples
  • Dice que fue abducido por extraterrestres en 1987. — He says he was abducted by aliens in 1987.
  • El filósofo explicó cómo funciona el razonamiento abductivo. — The philosopher explained how abductive reasoning works.
  • En la película, la nave abduce a varios testigos. — In the movie, the ship abducts several witnesses.
Common mistake

Don't confuse abducir with secuestrar (to kidnap, in the ordinary criminal sense) — abducir is reserved almost exclusively for the alien-abduction sense or the technical logic sense, and using it for an everyday kidnapping sounds off.

Often confused with secuestrar.
