Common in both everyday and formal registers; it implies choosing to deal with something rather than avoid it, unlike enfrentar, which is near-synonymous but slightly more about opposition or conflict.
Treating afrontar and enfrentar as fully interchangeable — they overlap heavily, but enfrentar leans toward confronting an opponent or direct conflict (enfrentarse a alguien), while afrontar leans toward dealing responsibly with a difficult situation or challenge.
Often confused with enfrentar.
