agriparse

Latin American colloquial verb (Mexico, Chile, and much of Central and South America) meaning to catch the flu — se agripó por bañarse en agua fría. It's the everyday spoken equivalent of the more formal engripar(se), and gripa/gripe is the noun it comes from.

• Me agripé por andar sin abrigo. — I caught the flu from going out without a coat.
• Toda la familia se agripó esta semana. — The whole family came down with the flu this week.
• Se agripa cada invierno sin falta. — He gets the flu every single winter.

Using agriparse in Spain, where it will sound odd — engripado or coger la gripe are the forms Peninsular speakers use; agriparse is a Latin American regionalism.
