alejar

to remove to a distance, put farther away, to lead away, to draw away; to estrange, alienate

Usage

To move something or someone away, distance-wise or emotionally — alejar el peligro, alejarse de los amigos. The reflexive alejarse is the everyday way to talk about physically leaving or emotionally drifting apart from someone.

Examples
  • Aléjate del borde, es peligroso. — Move away from the edge, it's dangerous.
  • El trabajo lo alejó de su familia. — The job took him away from his family.
  • Con el tiempo, se alejaron y dejaron de hablarse. — Over time, they drifted apart and stopped speaking.
Common mistake

Using alejar transitively when the reflexive alejarse is needed — 'I moved away from the city' is me alejé de la ciudad, not just alejé de la ciudad, since the subject is doing the moving, not moving something else.

In real life
  • song Aléjate de Mí — A 2010 single by Mexican pop-rock group Camila, from their album Dejarte de Amar — it became the band's third number-one single in Mexico.
