arregazar

A rare, mostly literary verb meaning to gather up one's skirts toward the lap, tucking them up out of the way — the RAE traces it to Latin recaptare, "to gather." It shows up in older descriptions of women working, wading, or moving quickly with long skirts.

• Se arregazó la falda para cruzar el arroyo. — She gathered up her skirt to cross the stream.
• Las lavanderas se arregazaban las faldas junto al río. — The washerwomen tucked up their skirts by the river.
• Arregazó su vestido antes de subir la escalera de mano. — She hitched up her dress before climbing the ladder.

Expecting arregazar to apply to sleeves — that's arremangar; arregazar is specifically about skirts/garments gathered toward the lap (regazo), a distinction modern speakers rarely need since the word itself is largely obsolete.
