ausentar

to send away; to absent oneself

Usage

To cause someone to be away, though almost all real use is the reflexive ausentarse, "to absent oneself" or leave a place temporarily: se ausentó de la reunión. The bare transitive ausentar (making someone else leave) is rare and mostly formal/legal.

Examples
  • Tuvo que ausentarse de la oficina por una emergencia familiar. — He had to be away from the office because of a family emergency.
  • Ella se ausentó sin avisar a nadie. — She left without telling anyone.
  • El testigo se ausentó del juicio el segundo día. — The witness was absent from the trial on the second day.
Common mistake

Reaching for bare ausentar when you mean the far more common reflexive — "I was away" is me ausenté, not just ausenté on its own, which would mean you sent someone else away.

Often confused with faltar.
