bizmar

An archaic, now rarely used verb meaning to apply a medicinal poultice or plaster to a wound — from bizma, an old-fashioned remedy made of cloth soaked in resin or medicinal substances. Found mostly in older texts and historical/rural dialect, not modern medical Spanish.

• La curandera bizmaba las heridas con hierbas y resina. — The healer poulticed the wounds with herbs and resin.
• En el pueblo todavía bizmaban las quemaduras a la manera antigua. — In the village they still poulticed burns the old-fashioned way.
• Le bizmaron la pierna herida antes de llevarlo al médico. — They put a poultice on his injured leg before taking him to the doctor.

An archaic, largely obsolete verb — modern Spanish for treating a wound with a bandage or dressing is vendar or curar, not bizmar, which will sound antiquated to most speakers today.
