Salvadoran colloquial slang meaning to steal or pilfer something, often in a petty or opportunistic way — classically, siphoning gasoline from a car left at a repair shop, but used more broadly for taking something that isn't yours: le chabelearon el celular en el bus. A narrowly regional, informal word.
Using chabelear outside El Salvador and expecting it to be recognized — it's a narrowly Salvadoran slang term; robar is the term understood everywhere.
Often confused with robar.
