chapear

synonym of chapar; to weed (remove weeds)

Usage

In Central America and the Caribbean, to clear weeds or brush with a machete — chapear el patio, chapear la milpa — a routine task in rural life. Separately, in other contexts, it can mean to plate or cover something with metal sheeting (chapa).

Examples
  • Salió a chapear el terreno antes de sembrar. He went out to clear the brush before planting.
  • Le pagaron por chapear el patio de la escuela. They paid him to clear the weeds in the schoolyard.
  • Hay que chapear el camino, está lleno de monte. The path needs clearing, it's overgrown.
Common mistake

Using chapear outside Central America/the Caribbean and expecting it to mean 'clear brush' — desmalezar or rozar are more broadly understood for that sense elsewhere.

Often confused with desmalezar.
