To build or set up (a monument, building) or to establish formally. Regular -ir verb; the g becomes j before o/a (erijo, erija). Common in formal and journalistic writing; erigirse en = to set oneself up as.
Remember the g→j spelling shift in yo erijo, not *erigo*. It is more formal than construir.
Often confused with construir.
