to detain, staunch, or hold back the flow of water; to stall, suspend, or stop a project or business plan

Usage

To stop the flow of something, to bring to a standstill; reflexive estancarse means to stagnate or get stuck. Regular -ar verb, c→qu before e (estanque).

  • El agua se estancó en el charco. — The water stagnated in the puddle.
  • Las negociaciones se estancaron. — The negotiations stalled.
  • Estancaron la producción. — They halted production.
Common mistake

Spelling: c becomes qu before e (se estancó, but estanque). It is not the same as estacar, which means to stake.

Often confused with estacar.
