venir

"To come" — a stem-changing, irregular verb (vengo, vienes, viene). Unlike French's venir de construction, Spanish doesn't use venir for "just did something" (that's acabar de + infinitive instead) — keep the two languages' patterns separate if you're learning both.

• ¿Vienes con nosotros? — Are you coming with us?
• Ella viene de España. — She comes from Spain.
• ¿De dónde vienes? — Where do you come from?

Trying to build a French-style "venir de + infinitive" for a recent past action — Spanish uses acabar de instead (acabo de comer, "I just ate"), not venir. Venir stays a straightforward verb of motion in Spanish.

Often confused with acabar.

• expression "Venir como anillo al dedo" — A common expression for something that fits a situation perfectly — literally "to come like a ring on the finger," used almost always with venir (occasionally ir or estar) to describe timing or a solution that's exactly right.
