The nearby promontory on which the homonymous lighthouse was built was originally called Pointe aux Morts (“Point of the Dead, Dead Men's Point”), from which the element pointe was replaced with anse (“cove, small bay”) in the name of the community, French L'Anse aux Morts (“The Cove of the Dead, Dead Men's Cove”). The phrase aux morts (literally “of the dead”) /o.mɔʁ/ was at some point corrupted to amour (“love”) /a.muʁ/, resulting in the hamlet's modern name L'Anse Amour (literally “The Cove L
