Matchi-Manitou

/mat.ʃi.ma.ni.tu/

proper noun/mat.ʃi.ma.ni.tu/

an unorganised territory in La Vallée-de-l'Or Regional County Municipality, Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Quebec, Canada

The territory is named after a lake, the name of which derives from the Algonquin terms matchi (“evil”) and manitou (“spirit”). The name of the lake is said to derive from an ill-fated hunted expedition leading to the loss of two canoes, after which the lake was avoided.
