Named after Roman martyr Saint Lawrence by French explorer Samuel de Champlain in 1604. Originally referred to the Gulf of Saint Lawrence (golfe du Saint-Laurent), coined by another French explorer, Jacques Cartier, who named it after the saint on the day of its discovery on August 10, 1535, which is Saint Lawrence's Day.
