aubette

/o.bɛt/

noun, feminine/o.bɛt/plural: aubettes

a small house or lodge; guardhouse, sentry-box; bus shelter

Inherited from Middle French hobette, diminutive of hobe (“hut, cottage”), which is either inherited from Old French huve or a borrowing from Middle High German hūbe, both meaning “hood, cap, bonnet” and ultimately from Proto-Germanic *hūbǭ. The use for roofs, shelters and suchlike is attested for German Haube, Dutch huif, but may also have developed independently in French.
