chapitre

/ʃa.pitʁ/

noun, masculine/ʃa.pitʁ/plural: chapitres

chapter; subject, issue

From Middle French chapitre, from Old French chapitre (also capitre, chapitle), an early borrowing from Late Latin capitulum (literally “little head”), diminutive of Latin caput (whence French chef). If inherited through Vulgar Latin, it would have yielded *cheveil. Doublet of capitule, a modern borrowing.
