From Middle French cruche, from Old French crouche, kroche, cruche, from Frankish *krūkā, related to Proto-West Germanic *krōgu (“pot, pitcher”), of uncertain origin. Possibly from a Proto-Indo-European root shared with Old Armenian կարաս (karas, “pitcher, large jar”), Ancient Greek κρωσσός (krōssós, “pitcher”), but the phonetics are problematic.
