dolmen

/dɔl.mɛn/

noun, masculine/dɔl.mɛn/plural: dolmens

dolmen (tomb consisting of a capstone supported by two or more upright stones)

First attested as dolmin in 1796. One theory states that it is incorrectly fabricated from Breton taol (“table”) + maen (“stone”) (the correct compound would be *taolvaen, not **daolmaen). An alternative theory states the term derives from Cornish tolmen instead, also a compound of toll (“hole”) + men (“stone”); compare the name of the Cornish standing stones Men an Toll.
