Probably to be linked to Late Latin farsus (past participle of farciō (“to cram, stuff”)), whence French farce (“stuffing”) and Old French fars (“stuffed”), perhaps with influence from Latin far (“farro, emmer wheat”), also attested in the meaning of “sacred cake”, whence Old French and Middle French far (“type of wheat”).
