Modification of Old French juignet (“little June”), diminutive of juin (“June”), based on Old French juil, from Latin iūlius. The concurrent use of the Latin term in the Middle Ages influenced the shift from juignet to juillet. Compare Occitan julhet, Walloon djulete, Sicilian giugnettu, Asturian xunetu.
