Probably a borrowing from Italian liscio (“smooth, polished”). Other theories include a crossing of Latin lixāre (presumably related to lixa (“lye”)) and allīsus (“crushed against”). See also Spanish and Portuguese liso, Catalan llis, Italian liscio.
