Inherited from Middle French martre, from Old French martre, from Frankish *marþr, from Proto-Germanic *marþuz, which see. Xavier Delamarre in Dictionnaire de la langue gauloise (2003) proposes confluence with a Gaulish *martalos. This is only attested as a personal name, however, of which neither meaning nor Celtic origin are certain.
