From Middle French palme, relatinized form of Old French paume, from Latin palma. Doublet of paume (“palm of the hand”). It is not evident whether the Old French word was inherited in both, one, or neither of the two senses. The form palme is clearly learned, but this formal distinction only arose in Middle French.
