From Middle French tousjours, from Old French toz jorz, tuzjurz (“without ceasing”, literally “all days”). By surface analysis, tous + jours (compare Dutch altijd (“always”), Danish altid (“always”)). Replaced Old French sempres (“always”), from Latin semper. Cognate with Catalan and Occitan totjorn.
